The Subject of this post is about your resume and more importantly having your resume up to date.

Here is the truth about resumes. It’s a pain to keep them updated. It’s more fun to go see a movie than to work on updating your resume. Some may even argue its more fun to clean the house than to update your resume.

The thing is, you really need to have an updated resume, even if you are not currently looking for a new position. You never know when your friendly neighborhood recruiter is going to call you with a real opportunity for enhancement and challenge.

Some companies these days allow potential candidates to submit their LinkedIn profile in lieu of a resume, others don’t. I understand that accepting a LinkedIn profile makes life easy for both the recruiter and the candidate applying for the job. What a LinkedIn profile does not show is interest. You may argue this but I am right.

You should look at your resume as the key you need to open up the door of opportunity. Don’t cringe more than I am cringing at how hokey that sounds but it’s true. Your resume is something you need in order to play the game. I remember my father telling me after every bad report card I got in school that doing well in school was like a game. The rules were set up by the teacher and that if you played by the rules and did what was asked, you would win.

You may think that your LinkedIn profile explains everything a potential employer wants to see and maybe in some cases it does, but it’s not in most cases. My advice to you is to spend the weekend updating your resume and you will be prepared.

I know it’s more fun to wash dishes or wash the floor but you really need to update your resume and make sure you are in a position to share it even when changing companies is the last thing you think will happen today. It’s like getting a bank loan, the best time to do it is when you don’t need the money.

The good thing about being an engineer is that if you design circuits there always seems to be positions available. Maybe not exactly where you want it to be geographically but the jobs are out there.

I talk to electrical engineers all day long for positions with my clients and there is a very long list of companies who are looking to hire good talented electrical engineers. I wish I could help everyone but I can’t. The good news though is if you are an electrical engineer and you design circuits, I want to talk to you and I am easy to get in touch with.
